We bet that headline got your mouth watering all by itself, didn’t it? Mexican food is well known for its rich and deep flavours, and a big part of that comes from the salsas.

Mad Mex has three salsa offerings with all our dishes, which range from the spicy to mellow. All three pair perfectly with all our dishes, so why not try them all, and decide which gives you your favourite taste of Mexico?

Roasted Tomato Salsa – Tomato is iconic to Mexico, and we pack a whole lot of tomato flavour into this thick, delicious salsa. It’s not spicy, but there’s just the hint of warmth in there to help bring out the flavour, and the notes of char that comes from the cooking gives it a stunningly moreish taste.

How do we make this salsa? Well, we actually publish the recipes for all our amazing salsas on the website so you can make a big batch of your own (we always share with our familia), but basically, it’s a lot of tomato, a little bit of chile de arbol and jalapeño, some garlic and onion, and a dash of lime, mixed perfectly and them turned into a puree.

Spicy Picante Habanero – For those like their flavour hit with a bit of burn, there’s the Spicy Picante Habanero. The Habanero is iconic to Mexico – in fact, it’s such a common part of Mexican cuisine that some people believe that all Mexican food is spicy. It’s not, of course (and the Roasted Tomato Salsa proves that), but nonetheless, a lot of people do enjoy a hit of Habanero with their burritos, nachos, and tacos.

Where does the spicy come from? It’s a combination of things. Habaneros are a big one, but also some cayenne pepper, a bit of cumin, and a solid hit of chile de arbol. Spectacular.

Salsa Verde – Finally, there’s our Salsa Verde, which has been part of the Mexican palette as far back as the Aztecs. It can be spicy or sweet (ours is sweet) and gets that iconic green colour from the use of tomatillo or green chile.

This one’s super simple to make: A bunch of tomatillos, a big of garlic, onion, and jalapeño (the more the spicier, obviously), and a dash of olive oil. Blend it all up and you’ve got something colourful and tasty to add to any Mexican dish.

It’s the versatility of these salsas that we love so much. It doesn’t matter what Mexican dish you’re eating, and whether it has meat in it, or you are going with a vegetarian or vegan meal, the salsa ties the flavours together to give you something rich and decadent with every bite.
