Q. Why Mad Mex?
Firstly, our brand has always remained true to its roots: to bring 100% pure fresh Baja Mexican to the tables of the world. Mexican food is the fasted growing segment in the fast-casual dining market. If you have travelled to the US and Mexico you may be familiar with the big and bold flavours of this fresh, healthy style of food. But before we came along, you could not find it here in Australia. Now it’s available all over the country in an energetic and authentic Mexican environment. A pure Mexican dining experience, with many of our restaurants licensed to serve Mexican beers, tequilas, and our famous margaritas. Our target market sit at the higher end of the fast food spectrum and we want every customer feeling good about eating at Mad Mex every day, both in terms of value and quality. When we talk about transparency, we’re not just jumping on the bandwagon. It’s how we have done things since we opened our doors in 2007. From calories calculators to making recipes available online. It’s no big deal to us, it’s just how we roll.
Q. What’s the Mad Mex back-story?
A. Where do we begin?
Let’s go back to the start. It was 2007 and we quickly hit the news after opening our first restaurant. Australians queued along the streets of Darlinghurst to try a bold new taste never experienced before in Australia. Growing up in Southern California, founder Clovis Young travelled to Baja – a place where Mexican cuisine and health-minded California collides daily. Here, he discovered burritos packed with fresh produce, lean meats and Mexican spices, combined with low fat, high flavour recipes.
It was this trip that planted the seed for the purest standard of Mexican food to take root in Australia.
Q. What kind of people are our kind of people?
A. Gregarious. Fun loving. People-people.They believe in the 100% wellbeing of their staff and customers in equal measure. While serious about great food, they’re not short of a sense of humour.
They will thrive making sure everyone is having a great day.
More fiesta than siesta. You will hire and lead a team motivated to deliver exceptional customer service through our range of pure, fresh and healthy Mexican food. Sound like you so far? Please, read on.
Q. Am I required to work in the restaurant?
A. Si, por supuesto! (Yes, of course)
You are a crucial part of the business and Mad Mex experience. We want you to be involved at every level. Your customers should feel like family visiting your place for a great Mexican meal. The atmosphere in our restaurants is fun, energetic and lively. Using finely tuned Mad Mex systems you will be able to spend time building your business, all while building a real rapport with customers. As a rule, we see the most successful businesses are run by the owners. The best thing you can do is get stuck in and learn all aspects of restaurant operations. Roll up your sleeves and get rolling.
Q. How much training do Mad Mex provide?
A. We’ve got Mad Mex systems down to a fine art.
Your business will feel like a well-oiled machine (only the best oils of course). Our training and operations systems utilise world-best practices integrated with online videos and detailed in-restaurant systems and guides. The beauty of the Mad Mex system is in its simplicity, focus on quality ingredients – and flexibility that allows customers to “build their own” meal. You will begin six weeks of training based in Sydney, both in our training restaurant as well as off-site. You will also receive a comprehensive Mad Mex Operations Manual, together with online training tools, materials and support. When you launch a restaurant, our operations team will get their aprons on and work alongside you during the initial opening period, assisting both you and your team for opening. This formal training includes guidance with our online teaching tools and operations manual, with ongoing support from our operations team. You will feel fully prepared with the tools and support necessary to maximise the investment in your Mad Mex franchise.
It’s right up there on the list of reasons to join us, no question.
Q.What are the set up costs?
A. You know what you’re in for. Now, what are you up for?
The average cost to establish a Mad Mex franchise is between approximately $375,000 to $550,000 +GST. This includes our franchise fee ($50,000 +GST), training ($15,000 +GST), shop fit out, equipment, opening stock and so on.
The final cost depends on a range of variables including size and location of the restaurant.
Q. What are the on-going fees?
A. Let’s be transparent: franchise Royalties are 6% of Gross Monthly Sales. The Marketing Levy is 3% of Gross Monthly Sales. (These figures are GST exclusive).
Q. When will I close the deal to open a Mad Mex?
A. At Mad Mex we pride ourselves on premium site selection.
Of all the reasons to join us, this comes first. At the time of your application, we are likely to have secured sites available as well as newsites still under negotiation. It is crucial to us that each franchisee has the very best site for their business. Potential sites will be discussed during the interview process. You may be offered the chance to franchise a site which we’ve secured but not yet opened.
Generally speaking, there are three options for site-selection:
1: You may be granted the opportunity to franchise an existing store.
2: You may be offered a franchise site which we’ve secured but not yet opened.
3: You may wish to nominate a particular area during the recruitment process. If Mad Mex accepts your application you may lock in a right of first refusal for that site or area by paying a franchise fee security deposit.
Q. What return can I expect on a Mad Mex franchise?
A. It depends. Each restaurant’s performance will rely on a variety of factors, therefore we are unable to provide you with an accurate indication of what turnover to expect.
After you’ve completed your application and signed our confidentiality agreement, we do disclose historical sales figures of existing Mad Mex stores upon our initial discussions as a potential franchisee.
Of course, one return can be guaranteed; a whole new lease on your work-life.
What more reason do you need?
We hope you have found every reason to continue talking to us. We’ll be happy to answer any other questions you may have.
Q. Is Mad Mex halal certified?
A. While Mad Mex as a corporation is not halal certified, and nor are individual franchisees, our chicken and beef suppliers are halal certified.
We do prepare, store, and serve our proteins separately, however, we cannot guarantee there will not be cross-contamination. For the same reasons that restaurants that serve seafood or nuts-based meals warn their customers, even when serving them a non-seafood and non-nut-based dish, we offer our halal customers the same courtesy in the interests of transparency. However, please understand that we really do take every effort to take every one of our customer’s dietary requirements as seriously as they deserve to be.
